A homeowner’s guide from your North Texas roofing experts.
If your roof is south- or west-facing, it’s had a rough month. As of today, DFW is in the middle of a 26-day dry stretch with highs of 99–102° and humidity sitting below 25% — the kind of stretch that quietly ages a roof faster than any single storm. Here’s what’s actually happening up there, and why it’s often mistaken for “just getting old.”
THIS MONTH IN DFW
26+ consecutive dry days logged at DFW Airport, with highs of 99–102° and humidity below 25%.
Those small stone granules on every shingle aren’t decorative — they’re the shield that blocks UV rays from cooking the asphalt underneath. Extreme, prolonged heat softens the asphalt binder that holds those granules in place, so they shed more easily than they would in a normal Texas summer. Drought makes it worse: there’s no rain to settle dust and debris, and the relentless clear-sky sun means nothing is blocking the UV exposure driving the damage. A little granule buildup in your gutters this month isn’t a coincidence.
Clear, dry skies mean bigger swings between blistering afternoons and cooler nights. Shingles expand in the heat and contract as they cool, and repeating that cycle day after day — with no cloud cover to soften the swing — gradually stresses the shingle mat. Edges and corners are the first to lift, curl, or cup. It looks like ordinary wear, but it’s really heat fatigue, and it’s often further along than it looks from the ground.
As heat drives the natural oils out of asphalt shingles, the material becomes brittle rather than flexible. Brittle shingles that then contract overnight are prone to hairline cracks — invisible from the driveway, but real breaks in your roof’s waterproof layer. They won’t leak in a drought. They will the moment fall storms bring rain back to North Texas.
Heat damage isn’t only coming from above. During stretches like this one, attic temperatures can climb as high as 150°F. That heat radiates back up against the underside of your roof deck and shingles, compounding the stress they’re already under from direct sun — while also forcing your HVAC system to work harder. Proper attic ventilation and a radiant barrier are two of the most cost-effective ways to take pressure off your roof from both directions at once.
Granule loss, curling, and micro-cracking all look like a roof simply reaching the end of its rated lifespan — so many homeowners wait, assuming it’s a “someday” problem. But heat- and drought-driven damage can age a roof years ahead of schedule, well before its warranty runs out. The only real way to tell ordinary wear from accelerated heat stress is a trained eye up close.
TEXAS HISTORY CORNER
August 4, 1936 — The Texas Centennial Exposition opened at Fair Park in Dallas, drawing millions of visitors to celebrate 100 years of Texas independence with new Art Deco architecture that still stands today.
Ninety years later, those Fair Park buildings are still standing strong through every DFW summer — proof that things built right the first time last. We think your roof should be built the same way.
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
— Benjamin Franklin, Founding Father
