Tips To Avoid Bad Roofing Contractors

Feb 11, 2021

1. Check If They Have Liability Insurance

Always ask the contractor to produce a copy of their contractor’s license. If they’re a legitimate contractor, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Some roofing companies (particularly in Texas) will apply for insurance and then immediately cancel simply to get the form. It’s important to check if  insurance is current and active. This is important because if anything happens to passers by, installers, contractor, subcontractor, delivery driver, etc., homeowners potentially can be held personally responsible should an occurrence be on your property.

2. Choose Local

Picking a local company isn’t only for convenience. It’s likely that they’re an established company with a community reputation to maintain. Roofing Solutions has served North Texans for over two decades. We have been highly involved in our local community from youth involvement to church and volunteer efforts, always a positive contributor to others….. we strive for more than the sale.

Picking a local company also has ramifications for your warranty. If a company moves or closes, that warranty isn’t going to do you much good. Pick a local roofing contractor who’s established in the community.

3. Avoid Door-to-Door Sales Pitches

You want to avoid those knock-on-the-door sales pitches. When looking for a roofer, go off recommendations, and look up their reviews online.

A lot of these companies will say you have storm damage, and try to get you to sign a letter of intent. Don’t feel pressured, you never have to sign. Get reviews, take your time and don’t be forced into anything.
Realtors, local State Farm and Farmers insurance agents trust Roofing Solutions, some for over ten years….You should too ~

4. Raise the alarm & shut the door if they Offer To Pay Your Deductible

Texas law (House Bill 2102) that requires policyholders to pay their insurance deductible. This is also written into every insurance policy/contract. Unscrupulous roofing sales dudes offer “free roofs” by waiving their customer’s deductible, thus duping them into committing insurance fraud. This new law not only affects the contractors, but the customers as well.

Failure to pay your deductible can result in obtaining a Class B Misdemeanor offense of 180 days in jail and a fine up to $2,000 for both the contractor and the customer.

5. Don’t Focus Only on Price

Wanting the best price is understandable.

Absolutely you should guard your wallet, but price shouldn’t be your focus. Cheap bids that undercut others might be too good to be true. Good materials and professional installers are gold in the long term areas of investing in your property.

A legitimate company with an office, overheads and the right insurance typically will serve you better. If you focus on price only, you could end up paying more to fix problems.

6. Confirm in Writing

Always get a contract that confirms the job in writing. It should have details on payment terms and details of what the work, materials and tasks to be accomplished are.

Never part with any money until the work is complete and to your satisfaction. Ask how long the job will take, a completion date and what size crew to expect.

Roofing Solutions typically will carry all costs until the work is completed.

7. Read Reviews and get referrals

Check contractors’ quality of work from past performance. It’s one thing to have good reviews, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re seasoned experts. Look for a contractor that has 50+ reviews that are at least 4.5 stars. This means that they have good experience and a proven track record of quality work.
