Hail isn’t the only threat to roofing systems in Texas. High winds and debris that they carry, can cause serious damage too. It doesn’t have to be a single, significant high wind event that leads to damage –exposure to winds over time can incrementally deteriorate your roofing system. Repairing or replacing any damage to your roof as quickly as possible is critical to prevent further damage and ensure your roof is protecting your home as it’s intended.
How Does Wind Damage My Roof?
Wind can cause shingles to deteriorate, loosen, push up or blow off. Water can penetrate these areas and cause leaks and further damage to the structures beneath. In addition, loose or warped shingles are more susceptible to weather the next time a storm blows through. Winds can carry tree limbs, broken glass, and other debris, that can cause damage to your roof and clog up your gutters. Clogged gutters can allow water to back up in areas it shouldn’t.
How Can I Tell If My Roof Is Damaged?
Outdoors: walk around and look for anything that seems out of place. Check the eaves (edges of your roofs closest to the ground). The edges of your roof are the most susceptible to winds and damage. Look for any missing shingles or damage to the flashing, ridges and chimney(s). Look on the ground and around gutter downspouts for any signs of granulation (colored granules that have become detached from your shingles). Even if no shingles seem missing or out of place, granulation may indicate damage exists.
Indoors: Check your attic walls and ceilings. If you notice any signs of a leak, call a roofing professional immediately!
